Ollomont, at an altitude of 1335 meters in the Valpelline, is an Alpine jewel situated in a green and sunny basin, characterized by a wild and sparsely populated environment, rich in lakes and streams, and surrounded by majestic peaks. This valley, historically a transit route since the times of the Salassi, was crossed by historical figures such as John Calvin and Luigi Einaudi. Famous for its copper mines, today Ollomont attracts visitors for its natural beauty and architectural heritage.
Must-see in Ollomont are the Parish Church of Saint Augustine, dating back to 1775, and various artistic chapels, like the one in the village of Vaud. The surrounding villages offer an authentic example of Aosta Valley rural architecture, with stone houses, long wooden balconies, and roofs covered in slate.
For sports enthusiasts, Ollomont is an ideal base for alpine ascents, hiking trails of regional and international interest, such as the Alta Via No.1 and the Tour des Combins, and climbing at the 3 rock climbing sites in Vaud, Barliard, and Glassier. In winter, the area offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and, for the more daring, ski touring and ice climbing.
Local traditions are alive, especially during the historical Carnival, where the landzette masks celebrate the arrival of spring with colorful costumes inspired by the uniforms of Napoleon’s French soldiers.
For families, Ollomont is an ideal place, with easy trails accessible even to the youngest, such as trips to the By basin and along the historic ru, the typical flat Aosta Valley irrigation channels that wind for several kilometers, and winter activities at the small ski resort including a snowpark, suitable for learning the basics of alpine skiing and for fun sliding on the snow.
Do not overlook the possibility of admiring the landscapes offered by the territory of Ollomont on horseback, thanks to the presence of a horse trail over 20 km long, which also extends into the neighboring municipalities of Doues and Allein.
Ollomont can be reached from Aosta in about 25 minutes by car or by bus with the “Aosta – Ollomont” line.
